How to Perfect a Glossy Pout

Move over matte lipstick! This season, lips are taking on a glossier appearance. From a delicate flush of colour to a simple sheen, read on to find out how to perfect the top beauty trend for SS20.

If the thought of lip gloss makes you think of a sticky, tacky mess, then fear not, because this season while lips are glossy, they also come with a comfortable, nourishing formula that will leave your pout with a voluptuous shine.

Seen on the catwalks of multiple spring/summer 2020 runways, Chanel opted for a juicy strawberry lip, paired with sun-kissed skin for a super fresh finish, while Off-White and Giambattista Valli kept it simple with a touch of clear gloss over barely-there makeup. Fancy a bold and daring approach? Marques Almeida opted for gothic black lipstick and then layered gloss over the top for a high-shine finish.

Whether you want to brighten your complexion with a splash of colour or keep it minimal with a nourished sheen, we’ve got you covered with the tips below…

HINT: Preparation is key. Ever heard the phrase, ‘your house is only as strong as its foundation’? Well, the same applies to your lips. A smooth base will allow you to apply your products with ease and will prevent a flaky, uneven texture. Prior to starting your makeup, use a lip scrub to remove dry skin from the lips, then follow with a hydrating balm.

Clean Slate

If you favour a natural look then follow in the footsteps of Giambattista Valli and pair dewy, glass-like skin with a slick of sheer gloss. Opt for an iridescent finish to add a touch of sparkle reminiscent of the 90s, or stick to a clear formula for a mirror-like finish. Fuss-free and effortless, it couldn’t be simpler!

Just Bitten

Add a youthful flush of colour to your lips by applying a coral, pink or red lipstick to the very centre of the lips with your ring finger, blending outwards and stopping just before you meet the lip border for a ‘just been kissed’ finish. Once complete, apply a gloss over the top to give your lips a plump and juicy appearance and team with luminous, bronzed skin, and a soft brown eye.

Gothic Noir

If you like to make a statement with your makeup, this look is for you! Whilst deep-plum coloured lipsticks might make you think of winter, this season saw vampy pouts soar in popularity, adding a cool and unexpected contrast against feminine springtime garments. Line your lips with a pencil for a crisp edge, colouring in the centre for a long-lasting base, then go over the top with your lipstick in your chosen shade, before layering a co-ordinating coloured gloss over the top for a vinyl finish.
